In 2006, Congressman David Norris runs a promising but unsuccessful campaign for the United States Senate. While rehearsing his concession speech in a hotel bathroom, David finds a woman, Elise Sellas, hiding in a stall. Inspired by her, David delivers a candid speech that is well-received, making him a favorite for the 2010 Senate race.

A month later, David is preparing to start his first day at a new job. At a park near David's house, Harry Mitchell receives an assignment from Richardson, his boss: ensure David spills coffee on his shirt by 7:05 AM; shortly thereafter Mitchell falls asleep while waiting and misses David, who boards a bus. He encounters Elise, who gives David her phone number. David arrives at work to find his campaign manager, Charlie Traynor, being examined by unfamiliar men in suits. David attempts to escape, but is incapacitated and taken to a warehouse.

In February 1942, U.S. armed forces defend Los Angeles from unidentified flying objects. Seventy years later, the alien invaders return to finish the attack. A fighter squadron is scrambled, but the aircrafts' missiles veer off their flightpaths because of a countermeasure signal being broadcast by the ship. The squadron is destroyed by the alien ship, but a female pilot named Lt. Solano is the sole survivor when she successfully bails out of her plane.
